Sancho returns to action but leaves the pitch frustrated

Forward Jadon Sancho had another chance to prove himself at Aston Villa but left the field visibly frustrated after being substituted during the 1–0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday (26).

The 25-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, came on early in the first half to replace the injured Emiliano Buendía and had an active performance, recording two shots and showing flashes of skill against the club where he began his youth career.

Even so, at the 74th minute, manager Unai Emery decided to replace him with Evann Guessand, prompting an uncomfortable reaction from the English winger, who barely acknowledged his teammates as he left the pitch.

Emery reveals substitution was part of fitness plan

After the match, Emery clarified that the substitution was part of a gradual physical plan to help Sancho regain match sharpness, stressing that the player is still not ready for full matches.

“Yes, he wasn’t happy — that’s normal — but I’ve done the same with other players. He played 60 minutes on Thursday, and today my plan was for him to play 30, but he ended up doing 45. It was a decision to protect him,” the coach explained.

Emery also emphasized that the decision was not a punishment:

“It’s not disciplinary. I’ve done this with Morgan Rogers, Buendía, and Leon Bailey. It’s part of the process. I’m happy with his impact — his energy and quality were very good. He’s improving with every game.”

Sancho working to regain rhythm under Emery

Since arriving at Villa Park, Sancho has struggled with fitness issues and lack of rhythm, seeing limited playing time in the Premier League. Before facing City, he had appeared only once in the competition, in the draw against Sunderland.

The former Borussia Dortmund star is trying to rebuild his confidence and regain the form that once made him one of England’s brightest young talents before his turbulent spell at Manchester United.

He is expected to receive more minutes in upcoming matches, especially with Buendía’s injury and Emery’s frequent squad rotation to keep the team competitive across multiple fronts.

Aston Villa continue positive run

The victory over Manchester City marked Aston Villa’s fourth consecutive win, lifting the team to eighth place in the Premier League — just one point behind their blue rivals.

This strong run contrasts with the club’s inconsistent start to the season and renews fans’ hopes of fighting for a European qualification spot. Villa’s next challenge will be against Liverpool at Anfield on November 1, a real test for Unai Emery’s squad.
