Aston Villa sells Jacob Ramsey for $40 million to Newcastle

Key Reinforcement for Rival?
Manager Eddie Howe had been searching for midfield options following Sean Longstaff’s departure to Leeds United and injuries that had reduced the team’s alternatives. Ramsey’s versatility, being able to play in multiple midfield roles, was a decisive factor in Newcastle’s interest.

A product of Aston Villa’s youth academy, Ramsey made his professional debut in 2019 and went on to make 167 official appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists. Last season, he recorded 4 goals and 7 assists in 46 matches, playing mainly on the left side of midfield.

Financial Impact and Villa’s Market Moves
The transfer fee is considered pure profit for Aston Villa under accounting rules, as the player came through their academy. As a result, manager Unai Emery is expected to reinvest part of the amount in new signings, targeting a versatile defender and a forward.
Among the names being considered are young Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse and Belgian Alexis Saelemaekers from AC Milan.

Newcastle’s Squad Plan
Ramsey joins an already busy transfer window for the Magpies. The club had previously signed winger Anthony Elanga (ex-Nottingham Forest, £55m), centre-back Malick Thiaw (ex-AC Milan, £34.6m), and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, on loan from Southampton.
In addition, Newcastle is still in the market for a striker amid uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s future. Yoane Wissa from Brentford is among the potential targets.

Premier League Debut
Newcastle kicks off its Premier League campaign this Saturday — coincidentally against Aston Villa. Despite the timing of the move, Ramsey is not expected to be available for the match.
Nevertheless, his arrival brings fresh energy to the squad, which will have to balance domestic competition with the Champions League.
