Elliott loses place under Emery and future at Aston Villa uncertain

Harvey Elliott’s spell at Aston Villa could be coming to an early end. Loaned from Liverpool with an automatic buy clause triggered after 10 appearances, the young English midfielder has featured only five times so far, starting just twice.

Manager Unai Emery acknowledged that Elliott’s performances have not been enough to guarantee a regular spot. A lack of impact on the pitch and stiff internal competition have made it difficult for Elliott to adapt to the team’s style of play.

“I’m being very demanding when choosing starters and substitutes. Harvey is training well, but his performances have not been sufficient. He needs to keep working to earn confidence and consistency,” Emery said after the Europa League clash with Go Ahead Eagles.

Contract may not be fulfilled due to low output

The agreement between Liverpool and Aston Villa includes an obligation to buy for £35 million if Elliott plays at least ten matches this season. Given the current situation, that target appears increasingly unlikely.

Sources close to the club say Villa are considering ending the loan in January and sending the player back to Anfield. The move would prevent the automatic purchase clause from being triggered, allowing Liverpool to regain control of the 22-year-old’s immediate future.

Elliott — a European U21 champion with England — arrived in Birmingham excited and said he was “on cloud nine” about the opportunity. However, adapting to Emery’s tactical structure — more rigid and with higher defensive demands — has proven challenging.

Emery praises talent but calls for greater impact

Despite the criticism, Unai Emery emphasized Elliott’s potential. According to the coach, Elliott is technically gifted but must better understand Aston Villa’s collective model.

“He is a number 10 in our system, and his quality is undeniable. However, he is still adapting to the way we play and to the intensity we demand. He has a future, but he needs to deliver more on the pitch,” the Spaniard said.

Emery also noted that Elliott can play on the right, but competition for the role is fierce. “We have players like John McGinn who perform that role well. Harvey needs to show he can be decisive.”

Liverpool watching closely

At Anfield, Liverpool are closely monitoring Elliott’s progress. New manager Arne Slot — who took charge this season — remains interested in reintegrating the midfielder should the loan be cut short. The club believes he can still develop within Liverpool’s attacking system.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa continue to fight on in the Premier League and the Europa League, aiming to adjust the squad for the second half of the season. Elliott’s future at Villa will ultimately depend on his ability to respond on the pitch in the coming weeks.
